The third Swallows and Amazons book, written by Arthur Ransome, takes the reader out to sea on a treasure hunt!
The Amazons—Nancy and Peggy—and Swallows—John, Susan, Titty and Roger— are preparing the Wild Cat to leave on a sea-bound voyage with Captain Flint, when they meet Peter Duck. The old sailor accompanies them, telling a story of a treasure in the Caribbean. However, the Swallows and Amazons aren’t the only ones to have heard this tale: Black Jake of the Viper is also aware of the old sailor’s yarn. As an unlucky search continues, trouble blows in, but not from the Viper.
As the series title suggests, Peter Duck is based on the Swallows and Amazons. However, there are chapters based on my favourite character, Bill. Having lived on the cruel Viper and not ever been to school, Bill has a very different personality to the rest of the children. However, he has a great respect for his shipmates.
This good versus evil treasure hunt is a voyage of great adventure. While the Wild Cat’s crew is driven by a thirst for adventure, the evil crew of the Viper are controlled by greed.
Although this tale was written nearly a hundred years ago, the book is set in the world we know with a few old elements, such as pirates and sea shanties.
If you’re a 9+ year-old who likes pirates, treasure and adventure—this is the book for you!
