Mosaics

This week, I made a mosaic of a volcano picture in a picture frame. I did this by placing little glass tiles on a piece of square board that was covered in glue. Yesterday, I learnt about mosaic history.

The Greeks made mosaics out of stones, shells and ivory, with themes including the triumphs of Neptune and the Orpheus myth. The Romans made pieces of the ancient art using stones and shells. They continued using the themes the Greeks used. Modern Mosaics are made of stone, ceramic, shells, glass, mirror and beads. Pieces of the ancient art that are in churches are made of gold and gems.

These are tiles used for mosaics.

At the bottom of some steps in a Spanish park, there is a mosaic dragon. The oldest mosaics have been found in Mesopotamia.

Ancient Mosaics were architectural, meaning that they were used in buildings. Modern ones are found everywhere from sculptures to flower pots to park benches to craft projects.

I really enjoyed learning about mosaics, especially about how they changed over time.
