Variables:
Independent Variables
- Dog
Control Variables:
- Distance
- Start and finish points
Dependent Variables:
- Time taken
Method:
The dog will wait at one end of the garden and a person will stand 14m away. The person will hold treats to encourage the dog to run at full speed. The dog will be timed with a phone. This will be repeated three times per dog for reliable results. Next, the results will be used to find the average time of each dog. Finally, the average time will be used to calculate the dog’s speed.
Results:

Conclusion:
Bo took 4.27, 3.79 and 4.27 seconds to reach the person, resulting in an average of 4.11 seconds. This is 0.34 seconds faster than Billy’s average time. Billy took 4.62, 4.37 and 4.37 seconds.
From the results, it is possible to calculate their speeds: Bo covers 3.4m/s and Billy covers 3.14m/s. This shows that Bo is faster than Billy.
Evaluation:
Overall, the investigation went well. However, it may have been useful to do two more repeats. This is due to two anomalies. In one, Bo was much slower at 5.43 seconds. In the other, Billy was faster and took 3.66 seconds.
