The Dragon and the Snake

This week, I read the Chinese story “King of the Forest” because it is Chinese New Year. I realised it had the same theme as The Gruffalo: a smaller, weaker creature outsmarting a bigger, more powerful creature. I decided to write my own story with a similar theme.

Dragon was stalking the swamp, looking for a meal. When he spotted Snake, Dragon pounced.

“You don’t want to eat me. My best friend is more powerful than you,” said Snake.

“Impossible!” roared Dragon. “Where is this friend of yours?”

“He lives in the river. You lead the way.”

They travelled through the swamp until they reached a herd of deer who ran in fright.

“They are more afraid of what’s going to happen to you, than they are of you,” Snake told Dragon.

They moved on until they reached a pond. As soon as the frogs saw them, they jumped into the pond.

“They’re scared about what my friend will do to you,” Snake said.

Soon, they came to a small clearing. The busy raccoons jolted up the nearby trees.

“Same as the deer and frogs,” hissed Snake.

At this point, Dragon was feeling a bit scared.

Once they reached the river, Snake pointed at Dragon’s reflection and said, “That’s him. He’ll only fight you if you go in the river.”

As Dragon jumped into the water, Snake shouted, ”My friend can turn invisible!”

When Dragon entered the water, he was swept away by the river’s strong current.

“Silly old Dragon,” Snake chuckled.
