Sieving and Filtering

Today, Mum and I learned about separating mixtures using sieving and filtering.

First, we took a sample of soil from the ground and put it into a jug. I put water in the jug and then we stirred it with a stick. Next, I tipped the mixture into a sieve with a tray underneath. There was still some soil in the jug, so I put in more water and emptied the new mixture into the sieve.

Pouring the mixture

There was still some soil in the water, which had gone into the tray. Mum tipped some of the mixture into the jug and we took it inside for filtering. We prepared the filter papers and put them into the funnels. I poured the mixture into the papers. The filtrate (water) started dripping out of the funnels into the measuring cylinders, leaving the residue (soil) in the filter papers.

I really enjoyed separating the parts of the mixture today. My favourite bit was seeing what had been separated from the mixture after sieving and filtering. I hope I do this again.
