Last Week on Butterflies

We found some butterfly eggs on a rocket leaf. I drew the eggs. We looked closely at the butterfly eggs with the digital microscope, and we noticed there were stripes. Afterwards, we found out which butterfly laid the eggs, by looking at a butterfly egg identification chart. We printed out a picture of the Small White because it was the butterfly that laid the eggs.

Next, I put some labels in order to show how a butterfly mates. The butterflies join at the end of their abdomens. The male’s sperm goes to the eggs inside the female and fertilises them. The female butterfly goes to lay the eggs on the underside of a leaf. All those eggs turn into caterpillars, then turn into chrysalises and finally turn into butterflies.

Next, I sketched a caterpillar. Then, caterpillar poo.

Lastly, I wrote information about how a caterpillar eats.
