An Action-Packed Novel Fighting for Six Stars

The Wee Free Men is one of many fantasy novels by Terry Pratchett and one of the few Discworld novels targeted at young adults.

As monsters appear on the chalk, Tiffany meets the battle-loving Nac Mac Feegles (Wee Free Men). Soon, her brother Wentworth is stolen by the Queen, ruler of the world known as Fairyland. Determined to save her little brother (despite him being annoying and sticky) and stop the Queen from invading her home, Tiffany teams up with the Feegles to break into the land of creatures stolen from nightmares. Can they save Wentworth? Can they beat the Queen and her army of nightmares?

Tiffany, the main protagonist, is shown to be protective of her home when the Queen’s presence harms the ground, referring to the hills as hers. She also displays creative thinking by finding a way around the Feegles’ law that their leader must marry one of them. Despite their speed and strength, the Nac Mac Feegles seem to be terrified by lawyers, panicking when the lawyers read some of their names from a long list: “They’ve got oour names! It’s the pris’n hoose for us!”

Good vs evil is one theme of The Wee Free Men: Tiffany and the Nac Mac Feagles work together to beat the Queen and her army of nightmares. Another theme is the value of family as Tiffany (despite finding her sticky, sweet-loving little brother annoying) risks her life to save him from the Queen.

The story is split between two main settings: the countryside around Tiffany’s family farm and the Queen’s kingdom, Fairyland. Both are in fictional worlds, making it impossible to tell if they are set in the past, present or future. However, the lack of technology and horses being used for transport suggests it is inspired by our past.
