The Dark Desert – Script Version

Scene 1:
A dig site in a scorching, calm desert during the day.

Characters:
Guinevere
Rex

Guinevere swings her pickaxe.

Rex: (shouting) Professor, we found something!

Guinevere, carrying her pickaxe, runs over to Rex and follows him.

Scene 2:
The centre of the ruin, in front of an unearthed structure.

Characters:
Guinevere
Rex
William

Guinevere: (looking from the smooth white pillar to the black pillar) What is it made of?

Rex: The pillar with the screaming skulls carved into it, the lightning bolt on top of that pillar and the right-hand side of the arc is made of obsidian. Everything else is made from marble.

Guinevere: (approaching a pedestal with a circular marble dish and looking up at the carved flame on the left-hand pillar) Fetch some firewood and a match.

William runs off the stage and returns a moment later with a log and a match. He passes them to Guinevere. Guinevere places the log in the dish.

William: Please can I light it?

Guinevere passes the matches to William. William lights the log. Guinevere watches in shock, William watches in terror and Rex watches calmly as a red beam coming from the carving on the arch obliterates the log.

Rex: (glaring, reaching out his hand for a match, speaking calmly): The carving in the middle of the arc shows fire coming from the circle’s edge. Maybe we should set the edge of the dish on fire?

William, seeing Rex’s glare, quickly gives a match to Rex. Rex then sets the edge of the dish on fire. Guinevere watches in wonder, William watches cautiously and Rex watches calmly as flames spread along the edge of the dish and feed into a floating fireball. Guinevere watches in shock, William steps back and watches in fear, and Rex watches calmly as the beam reappears and bounces off the fireball into the air in the middle of the structure and begins to fill the inside of the structure with red light. As the beam disappears, Rex picks up a rock and throws it into the light.

Guinevere: (as the rock disappears, speaks softly, astounded) It’s a portal…

Rex: Shall we go in?

William: (shocked and scared, emphasising ‘crazy’) Are you crazy? We could catch a virus, grow extra limbs, lose…

Guinevere: (interrupting William, speaking firmly) We go in.

Guinevere walks into the light. Rex follows her, pulling William through.

Scene 3:
A raging desert with black sand and three pillars of shadow during the night. Filled with evil laughs.

Characters:
Dark Guinevere
Dark Rex
Dark William

Dark Guinevere, Dark Rex and Dark William open their glowing red eyes while hidden by their respective pillars of shadow. Dark Guinevere steps out of the central pillar. Dark Rex then steps out of the pillar on her right and Dark William steps out of the pillar on her left.

Dark Rex: (shouting, grinning) We have bodies!

Dark William: (shocked) The coward came through?

Dark Guinevere: We must trap our counterparts from the Light before they escape, and then take their place. The Dark shall rule again!

Scene 4:
Somewhere in the desert with a dark tornado taking the portal into the sky.

Characters:
Guinevere
Rex
William

Guinevere, Rex and William wake up in the desert and look around.

Guinevere: (rubbing her eyes) How long have we been asleep for?

Rex: (calmly) It’s night, but we don’t know how time works on this side.

William: (trembling) Or this could be the afterlife!

Rex: (picking up a white stone from the black sand) Rocks can not die.

Guinevere: Let’s explore and find a way out.

William: (decisively) There could be…monsters. I am staying here.

Rex: (dragging William by the collar) You can stay here with nowhere to hide until the monsters find you or come with us and find a way out.

Scene 5:
Somewhere in the desert with strange glass-like structures and a sandstorm on the horizon. Near a gorge.

Characters:
Guinevere
Rex
William

Guinevere, Rex and William walk across the desert, passing strange, glass-like structures. Guinevere looks left and sees a sandstorm on the horizon hurtling towards them. Unable to shout over the gale, Guinevere gestures to head for a gorge ahead of them for shelter. As Rex and Guinevere reach the gorge and the sandstorm arrives, William closes his eyes. Eyes still closed, panic spreads across William’s face as his foot gets caught on a rock.

Scene 6:
The other side of the gorge. A devastating thud can be heard coming from the other side.

Characters:
Dark Guinevere
Dark Rex
Dark William

Dark Rex: (screeching) It’s them!

Dark Guinevere, Dark Rex and Dark William shoot across the gorge, flying.

Scene 7:
A cave near the opposite end of the gorge.

Characters:
William

William jumps as a few sticks fall to the ground. He looks up and sees three shadows flying over the gorge and towards the desert. He grabs some bandages on his left and begins to drag himself towards the sticks, trying to avoid putting pressure on his twisted ankle.

Scene 8:
Somewhere near William.

Characters:
Dark Guinevere
Dark Rex
Dark William

Dark Guinevere: All we have to do now is wait for the portal to reappear.

Dark Rex: (grinning, laughing) The only one not trapped will go nowhere near the Shadow Tornado!

Dark William: What if they escape?(Panic spreads across Dark William’s face as he realises what he just said) He’s getting braver.

Scene 9:
Outside the gorge, but close to the entrance. Near the strange glass-like structures. During a thunderstorm.

Characters:
Guinevere
Rex
William

William limps through the desert, trying to avoid putting pressure on his left leg, even with the splint and uses a stick for support. Hearing something, he turns round and looks inside the nearest structure.

Guinevere: (passing William her pickaxe through the holes in the structure) Can you smash the lock between me and Rex?

Without hesitation, William swings the pickaxe down on the lock. As the ground shakes and the cage disappears, Guinevere and Rex turn round. Guinevere, Rex and William watch in relief as a dark tornado retreats into the clouds, leaving a portal on the ground. Guinevere’s face becomes serious as she sees three shadows racing towards them across the sky.

Guinevere: (firmly) Go! I’ll use my pickaxe as a conductor and strike the dish with lightning. That should close the portal.

William: (stepping forward) I’ll do it!

Guinevere: (suddenly pushing Rex and William through the portal, whispers) Goodbye.
