Sprotbrough Flash Nature Reserve

A beautiful walk, taking in the lake, canal and River Don.

In addition to the wildlife, we also saw the dolomite quarry (the area is rich in dolomite due to being submerged under sub-tropical seas 260 million years ago) and lots of freight and passenger trains using the railway line.

From the bird hides, we were able to see goldeneyes diving; mallards; and several cormorants standing on structures in the centre of the lake (if you look closely, you can see two cormorants standing on posts in the photo below). We were excited to see cormorants, as we have been reading about these birds in our book Swallows and Amazons.
